The article studies the factors affecting the return on assets of commercial banks in Vietnam over the period 2014 to 2020. To complete the research objective, the authors have exploited the data of 15 commercial banks with relatively accurate data, ranging in size from small to large and accounting for 62.9% of total assets in the banking system, almost representing the overall. The author used regression methods according to fixed and random effects based on balanced panel data. The research results show that while the return on assets of commercial banks is positively correlated with the bank's asset scale, equity scale, liquidity risk, interest income and non-interest income, it is negatively correlated with administrative costs, credit risk and taxes.
